Larger versions of our structures can be designed to provide separate living accommodation whether as a holiday home or accommodation for an elderly relative. These units follow the same principles as we apply to our smaller rooms and offices namely:

  • high levels of insulation
  • plenty of natural light
  • secure windows and doors
  • efficient and effective underfloor heating, controllable by room.

This is a particular interest of ours, based partly on our direct experience of the choices faced by many of us when we have to consider options for parents or other relatives who wish to remain in a home setting but have special needs. Adaptation of their own home is often the most cost effective option, but there may come a time when further adaptation is impossible or very costly and the only alternative appears to be a care home.

We believe there is a demand for a separate, modestly sized home for people with a variety of special needs. Each unit, measuring approximately up to 8.4 x 8.4m to give 70m² of usable space, can be sited in a garden setting or grouped to form the basis of a community.

Working with specialist suppliers, we will equip the building with whatever equipment you require to make living easier. Specific design criteria could also be incorporated eg: low door thresholds, wheelchair access, appropriately sited switches and sockets, walk in bath/shower, adapted cooking equipment, alarm systems and motion sensors etc.

Each unit would contain an additional, small bedroom for a live-in nurse or to provide additional sleeping space for visitors. We are also investigating the feasibility of designing the structure so it can be taken down and moved or sold if no longer required.
